VERRUE

The village sits atop the crest of a promontory that provides a dramatic break from the monotony of the cereal-growing and forested plains of the Loudunais region. The charm of the site is enhanced by its highly original traditional settlement. The name comes from “Verruca” meaning “elevation”. The commune is best known for its Château de Purnon (a private site). Listed as a Historic Monument, the château boasts an exceptional roof structure and a wind turbine erected in 1900. Zoom in on cosses, this fairly hard sandstone limestone from the Cretaceous period (90 million years ago) is yellow in colour, turning grey with age. The fine, flat character of cosses has not prevented its use in extensive rural buildings.
