Ternay is thought to derive from the name of a small Gallic chief, Turnius. The first written mention dates back to the 11th century, “Ecclesia de Terniaco”. The history of this commune is intertwined with that of the castle and its lords. At the end of the 14th century, during the Hundred Years’ War, a fortress was ruined by the English armies, but in 1439 the knight Bertrand de Beauvau had a new castle built for his wife Françoise de Brézé. Construction work was completed in 1451. The Château de Ternay (private site – visit by appointment) houses a chapel considered to be a jewel of Anjou Gothic art, classified as a Historic Monument in 1996.
