Roiffé

ROIFFE

The name of the village of Roiffé is said to come from Roiffec, a Latin patronymic “Ruffius” dating from the 11th century. It was on this vast parish territory that Robert d’Arbrissel founded the Abbey of Fontevraud in 1101. The village suffered greatly during the 100 Years’ War. The village has a rich history, thanks in particular to Isaac de Razilly, a historical figure born at the Château des Eaux Melles, who became Governor of Acadia in the 17th century. One of the many legends about Sainte Radegonde can be found in this commune: that of the hanged cat. The Domaine de Roiffé site, which offers an 18-hole golf course, restaurants and accommodation, replaces the former farming colony of Saint Hilaire.
