Notre-Dame-d’Or

NOTRE-DAME-D'OR

According to legend, the origin of the village’s name comes from a golden statue donated by Saint Radegonde herself in the 6th century. The village appears to have been occupied as early as the First Iron Age; this being attested to by the discovery in 1843 of more than a hundred axe and sword debris, the most important pieces of which are preserved in the Musée Sainte-Croix in Poitiers. The village would correspond to an ancient place of worship, which in medieval times became a stopover on the route to Santiago de Compostela.
