The village’s identity is nestled in the heart of the limestone known as galuche. Discover, through the narrow streets, a picturesque village with beautiful architecture: galuche farms with their remarkable entrances, old windmill, large dwelling with dovecote and dormer turret, dry stone walls, washhouse, or even one of the oldest almond trees in Poitou… Between the 1630s and 1650s, the village contributed to the settlement of New France. The village thus has historical links with the communes of Aulnay, La Chaussée and Angliers. There is also the 18th century anecdote of the birth of Jules Verne’s great-grandfather, Alexandre Allote de la Fuye, in Martaizé. Jules Verne had cousins who lived in the village until the mid-19th century.
