La Roche-Rigault

LA ROCHE-RIGAULT

This commune brings together within its boundaries 2 charming former parishes with Romanesque churches (Claunay, listed as a Historic Monument since 1926 for its apse and bell, and Le Bouchet) built and sculpted in the local stone, tuffeau. The commune was created by the merger of several communes, most recently in 1979.
Château de la Chapelle-Bellouin, at La Roche-Rigault (open to visitors in July and September): The 14th-century château, built next to a 13th-century tower of which the lower part remains, was completely refurbished during the early Renaissance by Henri Bohier. Bohier was General of Finance under François I, as was his younger brother, who built Chenonceau. It’s a unique example of a fortified castle, completely refurbished, introducing Renaissance architecture to our country.
