Collegiate church of Sainte-Croix

LOUDUN

A superb Romanesque building dating back to the 11th century, the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Croix was the site of exorcism sessions as part of the trial of Urbain Grandier in 1634. This priest, accused of witchcraft by nuns, was the main protagonist of the “affair of the possessed of Loudun”. At the end of the 19th century, the church was converted into a covered market until 1991. Today, it stands out as one of the major monuments of Loudun’s heritage, with its exceptional painted decorations from the 12th and late 13th centuries. Since its restoration in 1995, it has been the setting for a number of art exhibitions.
