Between eclecticism & encyclopaedism, discovering’local history!
The Musée Charbonneau-Lassay houses rich and varied collections, many of which were bequeathed by the scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lassay (1871-1946): archaeological objects from the region and elsewhere, old books, swords and firearms. Today, his collection coexists with 19th-century paintings and emblematic pieces of folk art from Loudun, not forgetting the astonishing collection of African art, including some imposing ritual masks.
Housed in a former 18th-century town house, nestled in the oldest part of the town, the museum stands alongside listed historic monuments such as the Porte du Martray and the church of St-Hilaire, a remarkable Gothic building.
