Lovers of old stones and surprising atmospheres? Let Berrie take you away!
Cited as early as 1076, the name is thought to come from the Latin “Berria” meaning flat countryside.
The Barony of Berrie, situated on the River Dive, was one of the oldest seigneuries in the Loudunais region. The fortress is situated on a rocky base surrounded by a moat and associated with a renowned wine-growing estate.
Berrie is home to other surprises such as the Savoie manor house and the imposing remains of one of the oldest listed monuments in Poitou: the priory of Saint Jean du Bas Nueil (private site).
