The barony of Saint-Cassien and its majestic keep have come down to us through 10 centuries. The first square tower was built by Foulques Néra, Count of Anjou, at the same time as those of Loudun and Moncontour in the 11th century, then modified in the 12th and 14th centuries during the Hundred Years’ War. Richelieu had the fortress dismantled in the 17th century to consolidate royal power.
