The oldest traces of the château date back to the Middle Ages. From the 15th century, the castle was the fief of a Poitevin lordship and protected Loudun from wars.
In the 16th century, it underwent profound architectural changes that are still present today: Renaissance façade, galleries, dovecote, cellars.
